Placement Guidelines

Course Placement for FIRST TIME Freshmen

AAMU uses Next-Generaton ACCUPLACER exams designed to measure your mastery of a particular subject.  These assessments can help you and your academic advisor determine which courses offer you the best chance for success.

Taking the Accuplacer exam does not grant college-level credit, only placement for Math, English, and Reading-intensive courses.

Some courses require placement in English, Math, and Reading before you can register for its college-level course.  Therefore, you will be required to take the placement exam to enroll in any English, Math or Reading intensive courses if you do NOT have scores from ACT, SAT, or college level credit.

Students with ACT/SAT sub-scores requiring a transitional Math, English or Reading intensive course have the option to take the Accuplacer exam to improve placement.  It is highly recommended that the student consult with his/her academic advisor to ensure this is the right decision for proper placement and success.

Upon completion, the results will be available to the academic advisor to discuss with the student placement in the required Math, English, and Reading intensive courses based on the submitted score.

Accuplacer Accomodations

  • Purpose: To ensure that students with documented disabilities receive appropriate testing accommodations on the ACCUPLACER exam, enabling equitable access and accurate placement of first-year students.

    Eligibility for Accommodations:

    • Students who have a documented disability and whose disability affects their ability to take the ACCUPLACER under standard testing conditions may request accommodations.
    • The ACCUPLACER test is by design untimed and adaptive, and many accessibility features are built-in (such as an Accessibility Wizard, adjustable font/background, etc.).
    • However, if additional accommodations beyond the built-in options are needed (e.g., large print, braille, reader/transcriber, non-adaptive format), documentation and prior review may be required.

Procedure for Requesting Accommodations at AAMU:

    1. The student must meet with their academic advisor to indicate that they require an accommodation for the ACCUPLACER exam.
    2. The student should contact AAMU鈥檚 Accommodations and Accessibility Services at least two weeks prior to the scheduled test date (or as soon as the need is known) to allow time for review and implementation of accommodations. Quick link to accomidations request form
    3. The Testing Center reviews the accommodation request and approves or arranges the testing conditions. Depending on the nature of the request, accommodations may include:
    4. Alternative test format (e.g., braille, large print, paper booklet)
    5. Use of reader, scribe, transcriber, or interpreter
    6. Extended time or scheduled breaks (though the standard ACCUPLACER is untimed)
    7. Distraction-reduced environment or separate testing room
    8. Assistive technology (e.g., screen magnification, text-to-speech, specialized software)
    9. Once the accommodation is approved, the student will be scheduled for a testing appointment with the arranged accommodation. The student should receive confirmation of the exam date/time/location and the approved accommodations.

PRIOR TO TESTING

  • Placement Testing is offered in the Testing Services Lab located in the J.F. Drake Learning Resource Center (Library), Room 125
  • First time incoming students should consult with their Freshman Academy Academic advisor PRIOR to testing.
  • Please be on time! Be ready to test at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled test time.
  • Please review the Testing Center Rules
  • Have your official, government or school issued photo ID ready for check in
(IDs saved on any cellular devices will NOT be accepted).
You will not be eligible to test without an official ID.
  • You will be notified of confirmation via email.
  • Please do not arrive to testing center without a scheduled, CONFIRMED appointment.
  • All scores will be available to the appropriate advisor for further advisement.
