  • To whom does the Student Code of Conduct apply and when does it apply?

    The Student Code of Conduct applies to all individuals enrolled at Alabama A&M University. For purposes of the Code, the term “student” includes any person admitted to the University who is registered for, enrolled in, attending, or pursuing undergraduate, graduate, online, or continuing education courses or programs, whether on a full-time or part-time basis and whether instruction occurs on campus or off campus.

    The term also includes individuals who are participating in orientation programs, individuals who have been admitted and accepted enrollment, and those who maintain an ongoing relationship with the University, even if they are not officially enrolled during a particular academic term.

  • Why does the University enforce Student Code of Conduct policies off campus?

    Students of Alabama A&M University are expected to uphold the values and standards of the University community regardless of where their behavior occurs. The University may address conduct that takes place on campus, in areas adjacent to campus, or off campus when such behavior may impact the safety, well-being, integrity, or reputation of the University community.

    As representatives of Alabama A&M University, students are encouraged to demonstrate accountability, respect, integrity, and responsible decision-making in all settings. The University recognizes that student behavior, both on and off campus, can reflect upon the individual student as well as the broader campus community.

  • How are incidents reported to the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards?

    The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards receives conduct referrals from faculty, staff, students, the Department of Public Safety, other University departments, local law enforcement agencies, and members of the broader community. Referrals may involve alleged violations of the Code of Student Conduct or behaviors that may impact the safety, well-being, integrity, or educational environment of the University community.

  • My Conduct Case is still open and unresolved. What will happen?

    The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards continues to actively address and resolve open conduct matters in a timely manner.  Investigative interviews, preliminary meetings, and board hearings are generally scheduled within 5-7 business days following receipt of an incident report and are typically conducted via Zoom Video Conferencing.

    Investigative interviews are used to gather additional information, clarify details related to an incident, and provide students and other involved parties with an opportunity to share their perspectives before a resolution is determined.

  • My student received a preliminary meeting letter. What happens next?

    Any student contacted by the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards is expected to attend their scheduled meeting with their assigned Conduct Officer on the date and time indicated in the correspondence provided. During the meeting, the Conduct Officer will review the alleged violations, explain the applicable sections of the Code of Student Conduct, and discuss the conduct process and available resolution options with the student.

    Students will have the opportunity to review relevant information and documentation, respond to the allegations, provide additional information, and share their perspective regarding the incident. The conduct process is intended to be educational, developmental, and restorative in nature, with an emphasis on accountability, reflection, and community well-being.

    If the Conduct Officer determines that there is sufficient information to support the alleged violations, the student may have the opportunity to resolve the matter through either an informal or formal resolution process, depending on the nature and severity of the incident.

  • What happens if I do not show up for my  meeting?

    If a student opens or acknowledges receipt of meeting or hearing correspondence and fails to attend without prior approval or communication, the case will proceed in abstention. In such cases, a decision and any resulting sanctions or restorative outcomes will be issued based on the information available at the time, without the student having the opportunity to provide testimony or additional information on their behalf.

    A conduct hold will remain on the student’s account which will prevent the student from registering for classes, modifying their academic schedule, or accessing certain University services until all assigned sanctions, restorative outcomes, and conduct requirements have been satisfactorily completed.

  • I have a question about my sanctions or conduct status. What do I do?

    Please contact the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards at conductofficer@aamu.edu if you have questions regarding your sanctions, restorative outcomes, or current conduct status. In certain circumstances, students may be granted extensions for sanction deadlines based on documented or extenuating circumstances.

    Students are encouraged to work diligently and proactively to complete all assigned sanctions and restorative requirements by the established deadlines. Please note that conduct holds will remain in place until ALL sanctions, restorative outcomes, and applicable case requirements have been successfully completed.

  • I have a Judicial Hold (JD) on my account. What should I do?

    If you have a hold on your account, it is most likely for one of the following reasons:

    • Failure to attend a scheduled meeting with your conduct hearing officer
    • Failure to complete the sanctions assigned to you.

    You will have to send an email to conductofficer@aamu.edu and request a rescheduled meeting (if sufficient evidence is provided to warrant the request), request a temporary hold removal, or complete the sanction(s) before the hold can be removed.

  • My student has been alleged to have violated the Code of Conduct, what can I do to help?

    Encourage your student to review the Code of Conduct prior to their scheduled meeting with their assigned Conduct Officer. Remind your student to approach the conduct process with honesty, accountability, and respect, while also encouraging them to actively engage in the process as an opportunity for learning, reflection, personal growth, and restoration of community trust. Your support and guidance throughout the process can play an important role in your student’s development and success.

  • Are parents/guardians notified if their student receives a conduct violation?

    The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards official conduct-related correspondence is sent through the student’s official Alabama A&M University Bulldog email account. Students are responsible for regularly monitoring their University email for important updates, notices, and decisions related to the conduct process.

    In accordance with applicable laws and University policy, parents or guardians may be notified when a student under the age of 21 is found responsible for violations involving alcohol or other drugs, or when a student is found responsible for violations involving weapons or behavior that may pose a significant concern to the safety and well-being of the campus community.

  • I called the main telephone number (256) 372-5614, but no one answered. What should I do?

    If you don't get an answer when you call ext. 5614, we ask that you leave a voicemail with the following information: (1) your full name, (2) your A#, (3) a callback number, and, (4) the reason for your call. However, the best way to contact someone in the office is at conductofficer@aamu.edu.

  • What are common sanctions?

    Sanctions and restorative outcomes are assigned at the discretion of the Conduct Officer or Conduct Board based on the nature of the incident, the impact on the community, and the individual circumstances of the student involved. Examples of outcomes outlined in the Code of Conduct may include warnings, probation, educational interventions (such as reflection papers, letters of accountability or apology, and alcohol or drug education programs), restitution, counseling, community service, suspension, and expulsion.

    The University seeks to implement measures that promote accountability, personal growth, restoration of harm, and the successful reintegration of students into the campus community whenever appropriate. This list is not exhaustive, and outcomes are designed to address the individual needs of students while supporting community well-being and educational development.

  • What is the purpose of sanctions?

    Restorative outcomes and sanctions proposed by the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards are intended to be educational, developmental, and restorative in nature. The goal is to help students reflect on their decisions, understand the impact of their actions on themselves and the campus community, take accountability where appropriate, and learn from the incident in a manner that supports personal growth and future success.

  • My student was suspended; what does my student have to do before returning to the University?

    Your student needs to make a written request to the Vice President of Student Affairs asking to be allowed to return to the University via conductofficer@aamu.edu as well as the completion of any required sanctions.

    The request should be submitted 30 days prior to the student's return semester. It is the Vice President for Student Affairs' discretion whether re-admittance is allowed/permitted.

  • Will anything be noted on my student’s record?

    Violations of the Code of Conduct are maintained as part of a student’s disciplinary record, which is separate from the academic record. Conduct matters are not reflected on a student’s transcript or diploma unless the sanction involves suspension, expulsion, or certain serious violations involving weapons.

    In most cases, once a conduct case has been resolved, all sanctions and restorative outcomes have been completed, and the case is officially closed, the matter remains internal to the University’s disciplinary record process. However, some graduate or professional schools, licensing agencies, and employers may request information related to a student’s disciplinary history as part of their review process.

  • My student’s conduct case was dismissed; can my student’s record be cleared in the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards?

    The University’s conduct process is educational, developmental, restorative, and administrative in nature and operates separately from the criminal or civil court system. The process is designed to promote accountability, encourage personal growth, and support the well-being of the campus community.

    Students may request the removal of eligible minor conduct violations from their disciplinary record 12 months after the case has been officially closed and all sanctions or restorative outcomes have been successfully completed.

    Requests must be submitted through the  Cases involving suspension, expulsion, weapons, or other serious violations may not be eligible for expungement.
